DOVER - Joan T. Schmidt, 79, of Dover died Thursday, June 11, 2015 at her home surrounded by friends and her husband of 30-years, Karlton Schmidt after 19-days of Home Hospice Care. Joan Theresa Hoffman was born April 24, 1936 in Coaldale, Pa. as the only-child to Andrew (Tony) Hoffman and Wanda Jogeese-Hoffman. The family lived on Ruffner Street in Philadelphia. Joan and her childhood friends Vera Janton (Telford, Pa.) and Marie Molchen (Philly) enjoyed growing up in their neighborhood and graduating from Little Flower Catholic High School for Girls. The three friends (more like sisters) were well known for their passion for good natured fun. In their teens they regularly dressed as The French Maids and served the Hoffman's guest at weekly card parties and holiday gatherings to the delight of the attendees. Joan was gifted with an interest in music and a voice to match. Joan studied Lyric Soprano Voice, Piano and Theatrical Stage Performance for eight years under the guidance of Oscar Eiermann and Emma Zuern. Joan was a regular performer in the Philadelphia Symphonic Chorale. Joan attended Gwynedd Mercy College (Gwynedd Valley PA) to continue her music studies. Joan married Herbert Jones, a Tool and Die Maker, in 1956. The new couple moved to Vista Street in (Philly) to start a family. Joan was a homemaker and Mother to four children. The family relocated to San Juan Puerto Rico in 1965. While living in Puerto Rico from 1965-1970, Joan was a regular and guest performer with the Civic Theatre of Puerto Rico, Entertainment Associates of Puerto Rico and The San Juan Children's Theater. After her marriage to Herbert ended in 1970, Joan entered the workforce as an original Time-Share-Gal performing Resort Site Marketing Promotions in the Caribbean, Miami and Baltimore. Joan enjoyed her swimsuit and resort wear collection at the beautiful beaches and facilities that she was responsible for throughout the Caribbean. Those experiences lead her to become a Franchise Owner and Developer for American Tennis Systems in Baltimore specializing in building and operating Indoor Tennis Facilities in Maryland and Delaware in the 70's (This is how Joan met her second husband, Karlton Schmidt in Dover). Joan trained in the Property Management Industry managing properties in Philadelphia, Washington DC, Maryland, Virginia and Camden, Del. Her final working pleasure came as the Office Manager of Mom's House in Dover. Joan enjoyed her travels to visit family, grand-children, great-grand-children and friends along with crocheting, crossword puzzles, reading, singing, music, PBS mysteries, Facebook/Kindle and her favorite hot-spots around Delaware. She would share her beaming smile and good nature with everyone she met especially when she was sitting on the dock at the bay at her favorite place, JP's Wharf in North Bowers Beach. She will be missed by all.
