Jean graduated from Mrs. Herold"s School, Wicomico High School and briefly attended Salisbury State College. She applied for admission to the University of Pennsylvania with the idea of attending medical school, but since she was only 16 years old they suggested she reapply when she was 18.

She started work at Kuhn"s Jewelers and became secretary/treasurer. When her sons were young she stayed at home and later worked part-time for the Law Firm of Webb, Burnett, Jackson, later becoming office manager and retiring after 27 years with the firm.

Active for many years in the Community Players, she served as president and for a number of years did makeup. In 1954, she ran for register of wills in Wicomico County; the same year her father-in-law ran for sheriff in Worcester County. She is a past member of the Peninsula Regional Medical Center Junior Board and the Salisbury Community Chorus.

She was known to many for the Christmas stockings she knitted for family and friends numbering more than 100 through the years. She was a past member of the Wicomico County Hunt Club, and loved horses.

She is survived by her husband of 53 years, Gerald B. Truitt Jr.; a son, Gerald B. Truitt III, of Dover; two special nephews and their wives, Robert C. Leedom and Jacquelyn R., of Glenwood and James W. Leedom and Susan D., of Culver City, Calif.; and several nieces.
