DENTON - Janie Melvina Slaughter Bantum, departed this life on Monday, Oct. 13, 2008, in Caroline Hospice House in Denton. She was the daughter of the late John Riley and Mattie Lee Slaughter. She was born on July 3, 1928 in Woodbury, New Jersey. Janie was the second child of fourteen children. She was the owner/operator of her own business, known as Bantum's House of Beauty, for over 40 years. She was a faithful member of New Queen Esther A.M.E. Church, where she served faithfully in various leadership roles and ministries within the church. She also organized the Helping Hands Club and sponsoring numerous bus trips to various destinations. She leaves to cherish her memory, a daughter, Angela (Vincent) Brooks of Easton; a son, Percy (Belle) Bantum of Cambridge; four sisters, Gladys B. Turner, Berlin (Melvin) Stanford, all of Easton, and Joyce S. (Charles) Flamer of Denton, and Alice Woodlin of Ridgely; two brothers, Thomas L. (Henrietta) Wilson and Wendell Slaughter, all of Easton; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Queen Esther AME Church, Manadier Road, Ivytown, with a viewing two hours prior to the services. Burial will follow in Slaughter cemetery.
