Otwell, 93 MILFORD - James Richard Otwell, 93, of Milford, passed away Sunday, May 17, 2015 at the Milford Center. James was born in Laurel, the son of the late Joseph James and Mary Elizabeth (Powell) Otwell. He worked as a custodian at Milford High School from 1955 until 1970, and also worked for the Milford Post Office from 1955 until retiring in 1984. James was a direct descendant of Thomas Otwell, who was one of the early settlers in Jamestown, Va. in 1623. He was a man of his word, a modest and caring man, who had a heart of gold. James was someone that you could rely on and he would rather give then receive. In his spare time, James was an avid fisherman. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Hobbs Schelhouse Otwell in 1992; a brother, George Otwell; a sister, Anna Mae Kemp; and a great nephew, Keith Summergill. He is survived by a sister, Betty Smith Mitchell; a step-son, Marvin Schelhouse; a step-daughter, Janet Lee Wells; four grandchildren, Tommy, Debbie, Jennifer and Sharon; four great grandchildren, Lauren, Jonathan, Jessica and Emilee; one great great grandson, Cameron; two nieces, Patsy Kemp Sapp and Clara Kemp Summergill; two great nieces, Valerie and Connie; and one great nephew Danny. A Celebration of James Life was held at 1 pm on Friday, May 22, 2015 at the Lofland Funeral Home, 102 Lakeview Avenue, Milford where a viewing was held from 12 - 1 pm. Burial was in Milford Community Cemetery, Milford. In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions be made to the Milford Historical Society, P.O. Box 352, Milford, DE 19963.
