James M. Smith

James M. Smith, 88, passed away Monday, June 23, 2014 at Christiana Hospital. Jim was born in Milford, the son of the late Clarence C. and Clara (Holston) Smith. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during W.W. II on the USS Niobrara in the Pacific Theatre. Once out of the service, Jim worked as a lifeguard from 1948 - 1949 at Rehoboth Beach. Jim then went to Temple University, graduating with a Bachelors Degree in Engineering. He worked at General Foods in Dover as an engineer, retiring after 21 years in 1985. He was a lifetime member of the Milford American Legion Post # 3, a lifetime member of the Tall Cedars of Lebanon Evergreen Forest #49, a 32nd degree Master Mason of the Temple Lodge #9, Milford and a member of the Association of Professional Engineers. In the 1960's and 1970's, Jim was both a Boy Scout and Girl Scout leader for the Chesapeake Council and a youth football and basketball coach. He was a founding member of the Shawnee Country Club. He was also an avid golfer and had the distinction of achieving a "Hole in One" not once, but twice in his lifetime. In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded by his wife, Hazel T. Smith; and a son, Ronald M. Smith. He is survived by his daughter, Nancy Lee Drew and her companion Frank Woomer; and three grandsons, Scott Smith, Todd Smith and Brian Smith. A Celebration of Jim's Life will be held at 3 p.m., on Saturday, June 28, 2014 at the Lofland Funeral Home, 102 Lakeview Avenue, Milford where friends may call from 2:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to the Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay, 100 W. 10th Street, Suite 610, Wilmington, DE 19801 or to the Boy Scouts of America Del-Mar-Va Council, Inc., Suite 915, Wilmington, DE 19801
