DOVER — For the third consecutive season, the Indian River boys’ soccer team has advanced to the Division II state championship game.

The Indians’ 2-0 semifinal win over No. 10 DMA Wednesday night at Dover pits No. 3 IR against No. 4 Caravel in Saturday’s 7 p.m. final at Smyrna.

The Indians captured the 2015 DIAA state championship, but fell just shy in last year’s title game. Saturday’s showdown will provide IR the opportunity to win two titles in three years.

“We’ve got some guys who have been around for quite a while that have been to three championships in a row, and I know they’d like to get another one,” said IR head coach Steve Kilby. “Our seniors have done so much for us.”

The two squads played a nearly scoreless first half before IR senior Wilberth Gonzalez-Gomez scored on a header during stoppage time.

“One of our players took a shot, I took a deflection and I mean I was just there at the right time, right moment,” he said of the go-ahead header just before the half.

Ahead 1-0, IR put the game away in the second half with their second goal of the night off a header from sophomore Esly Carmona-Deras.

On a corner kick, senior Edgardo Velasquez placed a perfect ball and Carmona-Deras finished the play, putting the ball in the net to give IR the two-goal advantage.

“I tried to make a perfect run and Edgardo placed it perfectly right at my head, and I was there to finish it,” Carmona-Deras said of the game-sealing goal.

With a two-goal difference over the last 10 minutes of the game, things started getting a little chippy between the two squads. IR kept themselves composed enough to hold on to the 2-0 shutout.

“You get to this level and it’s big-boy soccer, as I call it. Players are playing hard and they’re playing for their team and I think there was a lot of hard, physical play but I don’t think any of it was done with any malice whatsoever,” Kilby said.

“They’re a really good team. DMA is very well-coached, they’ve got a great organization and we’re happy to come out of here with this win, that’s for sure.”
