SELBYVILLE — John M. Clayton Elementary School, Selbyville Middle School and Indian River High School were all named PLTW Distinguished Schools for 2020-2021 SMS was the only middle school in the state of Delaware to earn this accolade for 2020-2021 while Indian River High School was one of just 158 schools nationwide to be named a PLTW Distinguished Gateway School.

John M. Clayton Elementary School was one of only 310 elementary schools nationwide to receive that honor.

Together, SMS and JMC were the only two Delaware schools to earn this accolade and two of just over 600 schools to earn Distinguished School status nationwide.

A nonprofit organization that serves millions of PreK-12 students and teachers in schools across the U.S, the PLTW Distinguished Pro gram Recognition celebrates districts and schools committed to helping students own their education by increasing student access, engagement and achievement in their PLTW programs.

These districts and schools empower their students to unlock their potential by developing the in- demand, real-world STEM knowledge and skills necessary to thrive in life beyond the classroom.

“This is the first time our program has been recognized as a Distinguished School by Project Lead the Way,” said Selbyville Middle School Principal Jason Macrides.

“We have been fortunate to have dedicated and talented educators at the helm of our Project Lead the Way program since its inception. The combination of those educators, with the best students around, leads to a very rewarding experience for all.”

“I can speak on behalf of Selbyville Middle School in saying that we are

incredibly proud of our students and teacher, Mrs. Chelina Tingle, for earning Selbyville Middle School another national recognition!” Mr. Macrides said.

The PLTW Launch program at John M. Clayton Elementary began during the 2016-2017 school year. Jaime Swartz has been the teacher for the program since its inception. All students at JMC participate in the program.

The 2021-2022 school year marks the first group of JMC students to have participated in this program for all six years of their elementary schooling. This is the third consecutive year that JMC has been honored with the distinction of being a PLTW Launch Distinguished School.

“It is a great honor to recognize John M. Clayton Elementary School for its unwavering commitment to providing students with an excellent educational experience despite the unusual circumstances and unique challenges that the COVID-19 pandemic presented to the educational landscape this past year,” said Dr. Vince Bertram, president and CEO of PLTW.

“They should be very proud of their achievements in unlocking their students’ potential and equipping them with the knowledge and skills necessary to thrive in life beyond the classroom no matter what career path they choose.”
