Independent Newsmedia to close Delaware Printing Company

Move will not affect delivery; company reaffirms commitment to Delaware journalism

Posted

DOVER — Independent Newsmedia Inc., USA (INI), publisher of The Daily State News at BaytoBayNews.com and seven community print and digital newspapers serving Delaware and Maryland’s Eastern Shore, announced that it will close its printing facility, Delaware Printing Company, effective Feb. 10, 2026.

“This was not an easy decision, and we know it directly affects valued colleagues who have dedicated years of service to our organization and to Delaware journalism,” said Charlene Bisson, CEO of INI. “We are deeply grateful for the work done at Delaware Printing Company and the role our employees there have played in serving our readers, advertisers and communities. While our printing operations are changing, our commitment to our people, our communities and independent local journalism remains unchanged.”

As a result of the closure, positions at Delaware Printing Company, located at 110 N. Galaxy Road in Dover, will be affected. INI said it is working to ensure a respectful and orderly transition for impacted employees.

Printing for The Daily State News and select sister publications will shift to Adams Publishing Group (APG) in Easton, Maryland, while other titles will be printed at INI’s Phoenix, Ariz., facility. These changes are not expected to affect delivery schedules, circulation or advertising commitments for readers or clients.

“We know this is a difficult change, but our future in Delaware remains focused on reporting the news and continuing to grow our digital and print marketing footprint,” Bisson said. “We remain committed to our journalistic values and to producing original, locally focused content that reflects the voices and stories of the communities we serve.”

INI emphasized that the change in printing operations does not signal a retreat from print journalism in Delaware, but rather a reallocation of resources to strengthen local reporting and audience engagement.

“It’s important to us to continue producing nonpartisan, independent hometown newspapers,” Bisson said. “Selling the Dover property will allow us to reinvest directly into our newsroom operations and our long-term presence in the market.”

INI has operated in Delaware since 1952, when former owner Jack Smyth purchased The Daily State News, then a weekly publication.

“We will continue our mission of community journalism,” said Andrew West, editor in chief, who has been with the organization since 1990. “We have a loyal base of longtime print readers, and we remain committed to serving them. At the same time, we are seeing continued growth in digital subscriptions at BaytoBayNews.com, which allows us to connect with readers in new and timely ways while preserving the depth and trust that define our reporting.”

Rob Giarraputo, vice president of printing operations, expressed appreciation for the partners who worked with Delaware Printing Company over the years.

“We are grateful for the relationships built through Delaware Printing Company and for the trust our partners placed in us,” Giarraputo said. “We will work closely with all stakeholders to make this change as smooth as possible.”

INI is owned by a nonprofit trust designed to maintain editorial independence. The organization has no shareholders, pays no dividends and reinvests all after-tax profits into advancing its mission of serving readers, advertisers and communities through trusted local journalism.
