DOVER - Holly Bradford Johnson died peacefully Sat., Feb. 28, 2015, surrounded by family. She was born on Dec. 16, 1932 in New York City to William Bradford and Gene von Seckendorff Bradford. She was raised in New York's Greenwich Village and graduated at the age of sixteen from Washington Irving High School. She attended Barnard College where she supported herself by serving as the au pair for the families of Louis Kronenberger, a noted critic, and to Millicent McIntosh, the president of Barnard. While at Barnard, she met her future husband Charles Robert Johnson in the Columbia-Barnard Drama Club. She graduated from Barnard in 1953 with a major in English and went on to teach at Miss Hall's School in Pittsfield, MA. She and Charles married in 1954. While her husband served in the United States Navy she lived in Washington, DC, and Norfolk, VA, and traveled in Europe with her mother-in-law. Following his Naval service, they settled in Baltimore, Md. For several years in the 1960s, Holly worked as redactor and proofreader for Waverly Press/Williams & Wilkins medical publisher in Baltimore but returned to homemaking after the birth of her third child. In the late 1960s, she became active in the anti-war movement and for several years leafleted weekly outside the Baltimore area draft board informing young men registering for the draft of their options. In 1976, Holly went to work for the Enoch Pratt Free Library, initially as a reading specialist and then in the main libraries telephone reference service. In 1983, she and her husband moved to her family home in Dover where she worked as a reference librarian for the Dover Public Library. In her free time she enjoyed many trips with the Dover Parks & Recreation Dept. to her beloved New York City, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. In addition she was an avid listener of National Public Radio, and was especially devoted to the weekly broadcasts from the Metropolitan Opera. Holly is survived by her son Stephen Hughlett Johnson of Baltimore, Md.; and two daughters, Elizabeth Pryor Johnson of Hamden, Conn., and Kate Bradford Rohrer of Marydel, Md.; a granddaughter; and three-great grandsons. Instead of flowers, memorial donations made to your local public radio or television station would be appreciated. A memorial service in celebration of Holly's life and the first day of spring will be held at 2:00 p.m on Fri., Mar. 20, 2015 at Christ Episcopal Church, 501 S. State Street, Dover. Letters of condolences may be sent and guest book signed at www.torbertfuneral.com
