Hit-and-run leaves pedestrian dead in Claymont

CLAYMONT — Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal hit-and-run vehicle collision that occurred Sunday on Interstate 495.

Senior Cpl. Leonard DeMalto said that, at approximately 5:27 a.m., an unknown vehicle traveling south on the highway struck a man who was lying in the road for unknown reasons, then continued south.

The victim was a 68-year-old male from Coatesville, Pennsylvania.

The road was not illuminated at the time, and the victim, wearing dark clothing, did not appear to be carrying a light, Cpl. DeMalto said.

There is no make, model or operator description available for the vehicle in question. Identification of the victim is pending notification of kin.

Interstate 495 was closed for approximately three hours, while the collision was investigated.
