High school roundup: CR boys fall to Sanford; Royals pick up another softball win

Caesar Rodney High closed out a tough opening week of the season with a 17-5 loss to Sanford in boys’ lacrosse on Saturday afternoon.

The Riders, who lost to a pair of Maryland schools earlier in the week, fell to 0-3.

Sophomore Patrick Craig had two goals and a pair of assists with freshman Parker Smith scoring twice with one assist for CR. Goalie Dylan Bennett made 11 saves.

The Riders open their Henlopen North schedule on Wednesday with a 7 p.m. contest at Dover.

St. Andrew’s 15, First State Military 2: The Bulldogs dropped to 1-1 with the loss.

Wilmington Friends 13, Polytech 4: Bruno Nyandemo scored twice while Aidan Stephan made 15 saves in the Panthers’ loss on Friday.

Softball

Delmarva Christian 6, Smyrna 3: Pitcher Lilliana Showacre, Rachel Hall and Taylor Lowe all homered for the Royals (2-0) in their second win over a Henlopen North squad this week.

Delmarva Christian, which opened with a victory over Sussex Central, scored three runs in the first and three more in the sixth inning. Showacre earned the win.

Freshman Lacie Donovan hit a homer for the Eagles.

Sussex Central 11, Polytech 0: Madge Layfield threw a four-hitter with 13 strikeouts to blank the Panthers in the Golden Knights’ Henlopen North opener.

McKenna Boyle (2 RBI) had three of Central’s 15 hits while Mya Jones double twice and Katelyn Evick had two hits and a pair of RBI.

Polytech’s Rachel Carey reached base three times on two hits and a walk.

Caravel 13, Delmar 1: Mikayla Walsh’s grand slam in the third inning put the Buccaneers in control.

Ally Marly’s homer in the second gave the Wildcats an early 1-0 lead.

Archmere 7, Seaford 2: The Blue Jays trailed by only a run before the Auks erupted for four runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Sage Larimore drove in a run for Seaford before scoring on a single from Hannah Moore.

Appoquinimink 14, Indian River 3: Ten different players had hits for the Jaguars, who broke the game open with an eight-run third.

Samantha Derickson had two hits for Indian River.

St. Michael’s Md. 8, Sussex Tech 4: St. Michael’s built an 8-1 lead in the top of the sixth before holding off the Ravens.

Baseball

Sussex Central 17, Polytech 7: The Golden Knights outscored the Panthers, 8-2, over the last innings to close out the Henlopen North win.

Troy Morris went 3-for-3 with four RBI while Brenden Anderson, Noah Burroughs and Brayden Tidwell all had two hits to pace Central. Morris and Jaxon Steen both homered for the Knights.

Kaden Carney hit a home run for the Panthers, who had 13 hits in the game.

Salesianum 11, Smyrna 0: The Sals led only 2-0 before putting up eight runs in the third inning.

Dylan Wiley, Robert Durnall, Derrek Davis, and Connor Ryan all had hits for the Eagles (2-1).

Middletown 18, Delmarva Christian 1: William Austin’s home run sparked an eight-run fourth for the Cavaliers in their season-opening victory.

Freshman Chet Furmanek hit his first varsity homer for the Royals.

St. Mark’s 9, Lake Forest 1: St. Mark’s used a four-run first inning to take the lead for good in the non-conference win.

Sussex Tech 8, Dover 1: Grant Allen pitched four-and-a-third of no-hit innings, struck out six and scored three runs in the Ravens’ Henlopen North win on Friday.

Malikye Wells and Jonathan Stokley both added two hits for Sussex Tech (2-0), which led 7-0 after scoring three in the fourth.

Sir William Bauer had a seventh-inning homerun for the Senators (1-1).

Girls’ soccer

Cape Henlopen 3, Newark 2: Josephine Ingerski’s goal in the 67th minute broke a 2-2 tie and gave the Vikings their second one-goal win in as many days.

Giselle Garcia and Kayla Sponaugle also scored while Brianna Burrell made six saves for Cape Henlopen (2-1). The Vikings held advantages of 10-8 in shots and 6-1 in corner kicks.

Laurel 3, Arcadia, Va. 2: The Bulldogs edged Arcadia to even their record at 1-1.
