EAST NEW MARKET - Herman James Simms, 76, died Oct. 17, 2006, at his home.
Born on June 4, 1930 in Washington, D.C., he was the son of the late Herman and Lillian Knott Simms.
Mr. Simms worked as a pile driver and plumber over the years but working on the water was his preference for most of his life. He lived in Cobb Island, Sarasota, Fla. and moved to the Eastern Shore in 1975.
He and Patsy A. Monaco Foster were married on June 21, 1980. They have been together for 33 years. He and Patsy attended Countryside Christian Church located in Cambridge.
All who knew him knew his passion for woodworking and making model boats. Surviving are 16 children. Ann Cox of Millersville, Mary Elizabeth Johnson of Indianhead, Perry Simms of East New Market, Robert Simms of Waldorf, George Arthur Simms of Florida, Cecilia Simms of North Beach, Nancy Zilliox of Owens, and Danny J. Simms of San Francisco, Calif. All of these children were a result of his first marriage to Mary Ellen Simms of Charlotte Hall.
Surviving from his second marriage to Patsy are eight more children: Margaret Norris of Prince Frederick, William A. Foster of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Patty Foster of Cambridge, John J. Foster of LaPlata, Paulette Cheesman of Hurlock, Anthony A. Foster of Port Tobacco, Antoinette I. Peterson of California, and Joseph F. Foster of Manassas, Va. Also surviving are two sisters, Kitty Lomax of South Carolina and Lucy McLeod and her husband, Donald of Sarasota, Fla., as well as a brother, John Simms of Silver Spring. In addition there are 33 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren surviving as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Preceding him in death besides his parents was a sister, Mary Lillian Simms; two brothers, George Simms and Robert A. Simms, as well as a sister-in-law, Alma Simms and a brother-in-law, Nick Lomax.
The family will receive friends on Friday from 7 to 9 P.M. at Curran-Bromwell Funeral Home, P.A. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday at Countryside Christian Church located on Austin Road in Cambridge. The family will also receive friends an hour prior to the service. Officiating at the service will be the Rev. Chris Maddox. Burial will follow at Dorchester Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Jeremy Riley, Shawn Riley, Joseph Foster, Matthew Zilliox, Jason Barbee, and JC Barbee.
In lieu of flowers, memorial offerings may be made in Mr. Simms memory to Coastal Hospice, P.O. Box 1733, Salisbury, MD 21802-1733.
