UNDATED (AP) — The Senate has passed a bill aimed at controlling spending and addressing issues in college sports. The bill, which took over four months to pass, faces challenges in the House. Sen. Ted Cruz hopes the House will pass it within four weeks, but the House isn't scheduled to return until after the midterm elections. Some Republicans and Democrats have concerns about the bill, including antitrust protections and the employment status of student-athletes. The bill offers lawsuit protections to the NCAA and increases revenue-sharing with athletes. If the bill doesn't pass, conferences may consider self-governance models.
UNDATED (AP) — The Senate passed a bill that would bring new rules to college sports covering a wide range of issues including how colleges pay their players, what those players can and cannot go to court to fight and how many transfers between schools the players can make. Senators voted 77-22 to pass The Protect College Sports Act, which sends it over to the House where supporters are hoping the large margin and bipartisan nature of the bill will give it momentum to pass before the end of the year.
TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — The parents of an Arizona State hockey player who collapsed during an outdoor workout are calling for the coaches involved to be removed until an independent investigation is completed. John and Christina Mayich, parents of 21-year-old Matthew Mayich, released a statement through the family attorney, concurring with a letter sent by seven Arizona State hockey players to university president Michael Crow. The players asked the university to place the coaches involved in the Aug. 20 workout to be placed on administrative leave until an investigation by an outside agency is completed. The letter was sent anonymously through an attorney because the players feared retribution from the coaching staff.

Wilson provided a spark in a 23-13 loss, throwing a fourth-quarter touchdown pass to momentarily tie the game. Wilson played in 10 games for Utah before arriving in Boulder. Colorado’s offense is averaging a league-worst 21.5 points. The Buffaloes face No. 12 Texas Tech on Saturday as part of a stretch in which they play three ranked teams.
ROSEMONT, Ill. (AP) — The Big Ten Conference has adopted a rule to prohibit men’s and women’s basketball players who left school to play professionally from maintaining their eligibility. The Big Ten announced the unanimous adoption of a rule deeming players who signed professional contracts with the NBA, G-League or WNBA as ineligible to play for any of the conference’s schools. The rule also covers players who declared for the NBA or WNBA drafts but did not withdraw their names or declare an intent to return to college in the required timeframe. The conference’s announcement comes as waves of student-athletes have filed lawsuits against the NCAA’s new eligibility rules allowing five years of competition over a five-year period.

Lipsey averaged 13.5 points, 5.1 assists, 3.9 rebounds and 2.3 steals per game last season on a team that reached the NCAA Tournament’s Sweet 16.
