NEWARK — Delaware will probably never have Mike Brey back as its men’s basketball coach.

But Blue Hen hoop fans hope that UD has landed the next-best thing — one of Brey’s assistants.

Delaware announced on Tuesday that Notre Dame assistant coach Martin Ingelsby has been hired as the Hens’ new men’s basketball coach.

A 13-year veteran of Brey’s staff with the Fighting Irish, Ingelsby will be formally introduced at a Carpenter Center press conference today at 11 a.m.

Ingelsby replaces Monte’ Ross, who coached Delaware for the last 10 years, taking the Hens to the NCAA Tournament in 2014. He was fired on March 18 after back-to-back losing seasons.

Ingelsby played point guard at Notre Dame for one season under Brey, who recruited him for Delaware when he was coming out of high school. He captained the Irish as a senior in 2000-01, helping Notre Dame reach the NCAAs for the first time in more than 10 years.

He is a native of Berwyn, Pa., just outside of Philadelphia.

Ingelsby’s bio on Notre Dame’s website outs him as “one of the top young assistant coaches in college basketball today and one of the most popular players to don a Notre Dame uniform” and “Martin Ingelsby has been a cornerstone to the program’s success and consistency during his time as a member of the Fighting Irish coaching staff.”

Of course, Brey’s recommendation of Ingelsby still carries a lot of weight around Delaware, where he led the Hens to a pair of NCAA tourney appearances in six seasons before leaving to coach the Irish.

Ingelsby’s hire is the first major one for new UD athletic director Chrissi Rawak, who was just hired herself on May 13.
