DOVER - Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound. One of Delaware's most beloved pianist, Henrietta Flowers Dumas, "played her last note" as she was surrounded by family and friends on Monday, Feb. 17, 2014. Henri (as she was affectionately called) was born on Aug. 26, 1934, in Norfolk, Va. to the late James Major Flowers and Martha Harrison Flowers. She was educated at Booker T. Washington High School, and continued her studies at Norfolk State, Florida A&M University, and Virginia State University, where she proudly pledged Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and went on to receive her Master's degree from Columbia University. Henrietta's amazing sound played throughout the halls of Caesar Rodney School District where she was a music teacher for twenty-five years until she retired, however, Henri's friends would say her sweetest sound was her laugh, as her friends and family would enjoy holidays and pinochle parties at John and Henri's house. Henri was an amazing woman with many talents, not only could she play the piano and sing, but she was also an extremely gifted seamstress and would easily make something out of nothing. Henri faithfully served on various organizations: Delaware State Educators Association, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Don Del Enterprises, Founding member of So Rare Fine Arts Company, Delaware Choral Society, Sylvia Olden Lee Music Guild, Phi Delta Kappa, Eastern Star PHA Affiliation, Relay for Life, and an accompanist for the Modern Maturity Center, Westminster Village, The Singing Ladies, The Governor's and Mayor's Prayer Breakfast.. .just to name a few. Yet, this amazing woman still found time to enjoy spending time with her grandchildren and going on outings with her close girlfriends. Henrietta was preceded in death by her parents, James and Martha Flowers; two brothers, James Jr. and John Issac Flowers; sister, Glasselle Ruth Paige; and daughter, Regina Denise Cooper-Conley. Henrietta is survived by her beloved husband of 38 years, John C. Dumas; daughter, Monique Riddick of Smyrna; two stepsons, Anthony Dumas (Consuela), and Robert Dumas of New York, N.Y.; two stepdaughters, Cynthia Bostic of Fresno, Calif. and Annita Thomas (Michael) of Frederica; fourteen grandchildren, Aiyana and Ian Harris, Jeffrey, Malcolm, and Anthony Jr. Daniels, Harrison and Ranisha Mills, Jasmine Cuyler, Sameyra and Jireh Bostic, Mike Jr., Marcus, John and Michelle Thomas; two great-grandchildren, Jamilla Daniels and Reece Rembert; a special Godfamily, Herb and the late Sharon Alston and their children, Kim, Kenya, Kesha, Kameka and Keenan; and a host of other family and close friends who were all impacted by Henrietta's amazing life. The celebration of Henrietta's amazing life will be at 11:30 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 21, 2014, at Henrietta's church, The Presbyterian Church of Dover located at 54 South State Street, Dover; where family and friends may view from 10 to 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Millsboro.
