Henlopen Conference puts several swimmers in DIAA state finals

NEWARK - Caesar Rodney, Cape Henlopen, Indian River, Lake Forest and Sussex Central all had competitors reach the finals in the DIAA boys’ state swimming & diving state championships on Thursday night.

The finals are scheduled for Saturday at 6 p.m. at the UD Carpenter Sports Building pool.

From CR, Ryan Woodzell qualified fourth in the 500-yard freestyle (4:50.79) and seventh in the 200-yard freestyle (1:46.81). The Riders’ relay team of Mert Kayabas, Brady May, Woodzell and Paul Edelman took sixth in the 200-yard medley relay (1:43.22) and seventh in the 400-yard freestyle (3:27.1).

From Cape, Brian Fleming took seventh in the 500-yard freestyle (5:03.74). The Vikings’ relay team of Holden Tighe, Mack Leonhartt, Fleming and Kevin Lewandowski were fifth in the 200-yard freestyle (1:32.25) while Andrew Criswell, Shane Toback, Fleming and Tighe finished sixth in the 400-yard freestyle (3:26.98).

From IR, Shane Hall was fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:02.56) and eighth in the 200-yard freestyle (1:47.11); Themo Rigakos placed seventh in the 100-yard freestyle (48.80) and eighth in the 50-yard freestyle (22.18),

The Indians’ 200-yard medley relay team of Evan Peterson, Hall, Rigakos and Alexander Arnold finished fifth (1:43.06) and fourth in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:32.20).

From Lake Forest, Kyle Parham placed sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:03.12).

From Sussex Central, Breyden Wright qualified first in the 100-yard butterfly (49.85) and sixth in the 100-yard backstroke (53.22).

The girls’ meet state finals are slated for Saturday at 11 a.m. in Newark.

Sussex Academy’s Gracie Maughan qualified for the state finals in four events in the girls'  preliminaries that were held on Wednesday night in Newark.

Maughan, a junior who was named the Outstanding Performer at the Henlopen Conference championships, qualified first in the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:03.85. She also took second in the 200-yard IM in 2:08.12.

In the relays, the Seahawks’ team of Maughan, Victoria Evans, Sanne Elling and Addison McKay placed third in the 200-yard relay (1:52.03) while Maughan, Eve Mundock, McKay and Elling finished seventh in the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:43.63).
