LEWES - Harry Funk Lackhove "Captain Speed" passed away Wednesday, October 15, 2014 at home. He was 89. Captain Speed was born February 23, 1925 in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania to the late John W. Lackhove and Zola VanDeraw Lackhove. He was a self-admitted mischievous boy who did not care much for school. Who would guess then that he would dedicate 27 years of his life to education and also spend three years in the Army Air Corps. In 1951 he moved to Delaware where he fished, lobstered, trapped conch's and ran sightseeing tours over most of the waters on the Delaware coast and Ocean City, Md. Captain Speed owned and operated a motel and apartment complex, two separate storage/warehouse properties, a marina and countless water crafts. But what he is most known for is his love for his family and friends. He touched everyone he met, his generosity knew no bounds. Captain will be truly missed by so many. He was a member of the American Legion Post #17, Overfalls Foundation Alumni, Shippensburg University Club and the Lewes Yacht Club. Captain Speed organized the first ½ day fishing charter and evening cruise charter in Lewes. He built and owned the Captain's Quarters Motel and Apartments, he was the Punkin Chunkin Champion in 1995, Captain Speed was 1 of 2 speed boat owners (the Patriot Missile) in Ocean City, Md. For his 80th birthday he rode a motorcycle through a wall of fire, at 82 he para-sailed for cancer. Captain Speed was known as the official "consultant" and "fun coordinator". He was a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend to all that knew him. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his 1st wife, Joanne Swanger Lackhove in 1986; and his 2nd wife, Denise Moore Lackhove in 2007. He is survived by his sons, Stormy Harrington and his wife Beverly of Ocean City, Md., Kevin Moore and his wife Marilyn of Newark; daughters, Michelle Davenport and her husband Darrell of Dover, Carol Ann Forsythe and her husband Larry of Waynesboro, Pa.; sister, Zola Crull of Lewes; grandchildren, Jesse Melvin, Robbie and Jamie Moore, Drex and Collin Harrington, Joey and Jimmy Forsythe; great grandchild, Timothy Forsythe. A Boat Ceremony will be 10 a.m., Sunday, October 26, 2014 at the Anglers Fishing Center, 217 Anglers Road, Lewes. A celebration of his life will be 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the American Legion Post #17, 113 American Legion Road, Lewes. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions be made to the Tunnell Cancer Center Special Needs Fund, 18947 John J. Williams Hwy., Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971 or A.I. Dupont Children's Cancer Center, 1600 Rockland Road, Wilmington, DE 19803, in Honor of Captain Harry F. Lackhove (A.K.A. Capt. Speed). A drop box will be available for donations to both of these charities at the American Legion during the Celebration and for a time thereafter. Letters of condolences may be sent and guest book signed at www.torbertfuneral.com.
