Hannigan: Allowing all to vote in primaries is the right move

Posted

I’m writing in full support of the Opinion by Ms. Jill Itzkowitz and Bruce Dalleo, who back House Bill 188, enabling Delaware’s nonaffiliated voters to vote in our primary elections (“Let’s open primaries to unaffiliated voters”). I hope for passage of HB 188, the “semiopen primaries” bill now before our legislature.

As Ms. Itzkowitz and Dalleo stated, 31% of our voters are registered as nonaffiliated, and that’s trending upward. It’s common sense to stop excluding them.

We would all benefit from passage, as the participation of nonaffiliated voters would help both major parties select candidates with broad appeal to the general electorate. It’s also the right thing to do, and the fairest, since costs of our primaries are funded by all taxpayers.
