WILMINGTON — Habitat for Humanity of New Castle County will resume volunteerism on-site starting Sept. 7.
Due to the unprecedented challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic last year, the affiliate suspended group and individual construction volunteering, which typically accounts for 50% of the construction of a Habitat home in New Castle County.
In a traditional year, the HFHNCC relies on its volunteers — including retirees, church and civic groups, individuals and corporate partners—to assist on-site in constructing each Habitat home. In addition, many of the affiliate’s corporate partners choose to gift an investment by sponsoring teams of volunteers at an HFHNCC construction site.
Despite suspending group construction, HFHNCC served seven families this past year.
Group construction volunteering is at the forefront of Habitat for Humanity of New Castle County’s volunteerism, and though the COVID-19 pandemic continues to present challenges, HFHNCC CEO Kevin Smith remains hopeful.
“Although we know the COVID-19 pandemic is not over, we are excited to be opening up the opportunity for groups to come out to our construction sites again,” Mr. Smith said. “Habitat and volunteerism are synonymous with making a difference in our community. It will be good to have volunteers back again.”
The reopening of volunteerism on-site will slowly take effect, with groups of no more than 10 people scheduled only on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday of every week. As more dates become available, HFHNCC Volunteer Coordinator Maritza Martinez will assist with scheduling. For more information, please contact volunteer@habitatncc.org.
Habitat for Humanity of New Castle County continues to move forward by offering in-person opportunities for community members and the public to engage with its mission. On Sept. 30, the affiliate will celebrate the dedication of four Habitat homes on Wilmington’s Eastside. Members of the public are encouraged to attend. Those interested may register online.
