Gwendolyn Yvonne Duckery

MILLINGTON, MD - Gwendolyn Yvonne Duckery was born on Mar. 16, 1939 to the late Ida Naomi Dutton and George Hazzard in Millington. She peacefully transitioned from earth to glory on Feb. 2, 2016, while at home. Gwendolyn was educated in the Kent County (MD) public school system and graduated, cum laude, from Garnett High School, Chestertown, MD class of 1956. She worked various jobs throughout her career. She retired from the News Journal Company, as a News Assistant, after 20 years of service. Gwendolyn, affectionately known as, Mom Dot, was an avid reader and thoroughly enjoyed studying the Bible. Over the course of six years she wrote her own overview of the bible, in study form, from Genesis to Revelations. She was especially proud of her collection of books and elephants. She enjoyed watching talk shows and the Game Show Network. She was an active member of Mt. Olive AME Church, Butlertown, MD and a honorary member of Jericho Faith Deliverance Church, Ridgely, MD. She was preceded in death by her son, James (Tony) Roane; son-in-law, Elder-Elect Bruce Johnson; granddaughter, Shirell Duckery; three brothers, Reginald Wilson, George and Freddie Hazzard; and one sister Betty Dunnum. She is survived by five children, Michael Duckery (Phyllis), Ida Brown, Elder Tawnya Johnson, Jeffrey and Avery Roane; seven grandchildren, Elder CaSandra Wilson (Jeffrey), Avery Brown, Jarmall Williams, James Brown, Psalmist Yvonne Duckery, Tawnya Brown, Trey Ruff and Darrius Holden; 15 great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; three brothers, Rev. Isaaac D. Wilson III (Marian), Devereaux Wilson (Mary), Matthew Hazzard, and sister in law Beverly Wilson; two sisters, Barbara Shephard-Taylor(Gregory), and Marilyn Briscoe; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends; and her sister in Christ, Bernice Marsh. A visitation will be held on Sunday, Feb. 7, 2016 from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, Millington, MD. A second visitation will be held at the Mt. Olive AME Church in Worton, on Monday, Feb. 8, 2016 from 10:00 a.m. – 11:45 a.m., followed by a funeral service at 12:00 noon. Interment will be in John Wesley Cemetery, Millington, MD.
