It will be a busy weekend for nearly all local wrestling teams.

Twelve of the Henlopen Conference’s 14 squads are slated to compete in seven different events in three states.

Some teams are going to dual meet tournaments while others are entered in invitationals.

Polytech, Sussex Central and Sussex Tech will all be at the Delcastle Invitational while Laurel, Milford and Woodbridge are scheduled to take part at the Bob Rowe Memorial tournament at J.M. Bennett (Md.).

On the dual meet side, Caesar Rodney will take a trip to the Hamburg Invitational (Pa.) on Saturday at Hamburg Area High, where the Riders are scheduled to compete in five dual meets that day. Fresh off their second consecutive Henlopen Northern Division victory on Wednesday, the Riders would like to keep that momentum up.

“We’ll be busy up there,” said CR coach Dan Rigby. “It will be a lot of good competition and we need to be ready to rock again.”

Smyrna is headed to the Virginia Duals in Hampton, Va. hosted at the Hampton Coliseum for a two-day competition that begins today. There are 16 teams in the tournament which is in its 36th year of existence.

Cape Henlopen will also be in Pennsylvania this weekend at the Big Red Tournament at Souderton Area High.

The invitationals continue next weekend, Smyrna will be hosting the Eagle Classic with Caesar Rodney, Dover, Indian River and Smyrna joined by A.I. DuPont, Newark, St. Georges, St. Mark’s, Archbishop Curley (Md.), John Carroll (Md.), Malvern Prep (Pa.) and Manheim Township (Pa.).

Malvern Prep is currently ranked No. 20 in the country according to InterMat wrestling.

Big win for Smyrna

Smyrna High picked up an interesting 31-28 win over McDonogh, Md. last week.

With the match starting at 160 pounds, the Eagles jumped out to a 28-0 lead only to have McDonogh come storming back.

Chase Archangelo’s 8-2 decision at 132 pounds — Smyrna’s only win in the final eight individual bouts — ended up being the difference for the Eagles.

Larsen Wilson (182) and Anthony Wuest (220) both had pins in the match.

At the Beast of the East in December, McDonogh finished No. 31 in the team standings compared to No. 49 for Smyrna.

It’s the second year in a row the Eagles defeated McDonogh in a dual meet. Last season they won at home 33-30.

Bucs shine at IR

Milford made another strong tourney showing, this time at last week’s Battle at the Beach at Indian River.

The Buccaneers (194.5 points) finished second only to nationally-ranked Malvern Prep (280) in the 15-team event. Sussex Central (191) took third.

While Malvern had eight individual champions, Milford crowned three: Robbie Rosser (106 pounds), Bart Dalious (145) and Bryan Wynes (285). Sussex Central’s Lucas Hudson was the 170-pound champion.
