CAMBRIDGE - Granville Lloyd Tubman Jr., 95, passed away at the Dorchester General Hospital on Monday, April 7, 2008.
He was born in Cambridge on Dec. 30, 1912 and was the son of Granville Lloyd Tubman Sr. and Naomi Willis Tubman.
Mr. Tubman spent a few of his early years living in Baltimore where his father had a fine shoe factory with his brother, Robert Eugene Tubman. In 1918, the family moved to a new home on Hambrooks Blvd. called "Ayershire." Granville attended the Academy School from 1919-1925. From there, he attended the Seminary School on the Harbor. He graduated in 1930 and was a member of the class which was the first class to graduate from the new Cambridge High School.
In 1930, he attended Johns Hopkins University with the intention of becoming a doctor. However, his father purchased the Evans Jewelry Store on Poplar Street in Cambridge and asked Granville to join him in the business. Mr. Tubman spent over 76 years in the jewelry business first at Tubman's The Jewelers from 1938-60, then the Jewel Box in Dover, Del. from 1960-1985. After he retired, his customers still called on him for their jewelry needs. He was very dedicated and highly respected in his profession.
During the 1930s, Mr. Tubman served in the National Guard, 29th Division, and was a member of the Cambridge Rotary Club from 1938 until his death.
Mr. Tubman married Margaret (Peggy) Nielsen Tubman from Lake Bluff, Ill. on June 28, 1941. They made their home in Cambridge until April 1942 when Mr. Tubman enlisted in the Navy. They spent two years in Norfolk, Va. where their son, Terry Lloyd Tubman was born. Mr. Tubman was a Supply Sergeant at the Norfolk Naval Base. After receiving a commission as Pay Clerk he was sent to the Pacific Theater of the war where he was stationed in Australia, New Guinea and the Philippines. He received an honorable discharge from the Navy in 1945.
Mr. Tubman loved tennis, gardening, boating and traveling. He was a skilled carpenter and built his own 32' sailboat.
Mr. Tubman was a member of Christ Episcopal Church where he served many years on the Vestry and the Graveyard Committee. He was a member of the Cambridge Rotary Club, Cambridge Yacht Club, Chesapeake Bay Rotary Yacht Squadron, Dorchester Arts Center, Dorchester County Historical Society, a Founder of Sailwinds, a member of the Grand National Waterfowl Association, The Indoor Racquet Club, the American Gemological Society, the Retail Jewelers Association, a supporter of the YMCA and the James G. Busick Memorial Tennis Facility, Dorchester Farm Club, Fraternal Order of the Police and honorary member of Rescue Fire Company Inc. and a member of St. John's Chapel.
Mr. Tubman is survived by one son, Terry Lloyd Tubman; one daughter, Susan Tubman Blake and husband, Richard M. Blake; four granddaughters, Mary Beth Glessner, Christy B. Waters and her husband, John Waters, Wendy T. Collins and her husband, Bruce Collins, Melissa T. Fox and her husband, Ryan Fox; six great-grandchildren, Shelby Louise Glessner, Samuel Lloyd Glessner, Sarah Margaret Waters, Mason Blake Waters, Alyssa Skye Fox and Brayden Daniel Fox; one brother, William Willis Tubman and his wife, Olga J. Tubman; one sister-in-law, Jane Nielsen and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Louise Mace and a brother, Richard Tubman.
A funeral service will be held at Christ Episcopal Church in Cambridge at 11 a.m. on Thursdaywith the Rev. Michael D. Reddig officiating. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 7 – 9 p.m. at the church. Burial will be in Christ Churchyard.
Pallbearers will be John Waters, Bruce Collins, Ronald Cannon, Chris Smith, Brig. Gen. James Adkins and William Willis Tubman Jr. Honorary pallbearers will be John Neild Jr., Paul Brooks, William Vincent and Linwood Miller.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Christ Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 456, Cambridge, MD 21613; St. John's Chapel, 1213 Hudson Road, Cambridge, MD 21613 or to Dorchester General Hospital, P. O. Box 439, Cambridge, MD 21613.
