Graffagnino: How do we stop the killing?

Posted

Let's begin by looking at some of the recent stories in the Delaware State News:

  • One dead, another injured in Wilmington Hospital shooting
  • Dover teen arrested on firearms charges
  • Shots fired at residence in Dover
  • Residence, vehicle struck by gunfire in Dover
  • Safety solutions needed before it's too late

The Second Amendment . . . . A response to Mr. Hague's recent post:

I found your response to my recent post in this venue most interesting and disturbing.  You seem to have chosen to ignore the most important comment I made.  Let me refresh your memory as to that comment:

"ONE THING IS FOR CERTAIN:  SOMEHOW, SOMEWAY WE HAVE TO FIND A WAY TO STOP THE KILLING."  So, I challenge you Mr. Hague, how do we stop the killing?

You are so proud that the Second Amendment was put in place by our forefathers and that no other country has anything like it in their constitutions.

I will not bore you with the list of countries which I am referencing again.  Suffice to say that there are twelve high income countries besides the United States that have suffered greatly from gun violence.

My question to you is why haven't these countries and others ever considered an instrument like our Second Amendment if it is such a wonderful option?  Maybe, just maybe, it is because they think such an edition to their bylaws isn't such a good idea!  Yet you praised our forefathers for their initiative and foresight.  I agree with you.

It was a good idea for the 1800's but not now.  In the 1800's there was very little if any law enforcement entities in our country.  Homesteaders were on their own to protect their homes and families.  Those days are long gone.  I don't think that the Nanticoke Indians of Delaware have any plans to attack Food Lion or Walmart in 2026!

Our country is not the shining light of freedom that you seem to think it is.  Our government, and that includes the present one in power, have made terrible choices throughout our history.  Let's take a look at some of the worst of the worst.

I believe it was President Tyler whose dream was to expand our country from sea to shining sea.  One little thing stood in his way, thousands of Native American Indians.  They lived on the great plains of our country.  He found a way to solve that little problem.  Did he go in and kill all of the Native American Indians?  No, that would have been political suicide.  Instead, he went in and killed all the buffalo which was the Native American's lifeline to their existence.  The Native Americans used the buffalo for their food, their clothing, their eating utensils and everything else associated with their existence.  These Native Americans had no choice but to leave their homes as their food supply was ripped away from them.  They went West and were resettled in a land which had no water, no food supply and the very minimum of anything for their survival. Many native Americans live in such conditions today. I recently saw a historical picture of a man of average height standing on a pile of something that appeared to be about three or four times his height.  He was standing on a pile of buffalo bones that our President ordered killed to deny these Native Americans of their birthright.  That's just one event of our wonderful government that took place to satisfy their ambitions.  Let's take a look at some other highlights of our politicians that come to mind.

Korea:  More American lives lost after WWII

Viet Nam: Over 50,000 lives lost and for what?

The Bay of Pigs Invasion of Cuba.  That went well.

And now in Iran.  One of the very first engagements in that war that we started was to destroy a Military Objective within Iran.  Our forces did a good job with that objective.  What they destroyed was a young girl's school which resulted in killing children.  Oh well, bad Intel on that one.  These events are just the tip of the iceberg!

In reference to other countries and their efforts to curve gun violence I noted the following in my post:

Most of the more stable nations with populations over 10 million have found ways.  They as a whole are quick to react.  They are not burdened with laws written hundreds of years ago that no longer serve their population.  Of course, that depends on which side of the fence one sits on.  One thing is certain:  somehow, some way, we have to find a way to stop the killing as I noted above.  It appears that is not one of your major concerns since there is no mention of same in your response.  As you point out no other country has a law like the second amendment.

By your thinking, since we are the only country on the planet that has the Second Amendment to our Constitution, all the other countries on the planet are lacking in same.  I didn't realize that the Second Amendment was so divine and that the rest of the entire world failed to have such an important instrument.  Or maybe Mr. Hague the other countries of the world thought better on making such a choice in the laws.

The Second Amendment was perfect for its time.  As stated before, in the 1800's Homesteaders were left on their own to defend themselves.  Their weapons of choice back then were muskets and flint locks.  They had no access to weapons like the AR-15 and other assault weapons found in today's world.  The fact that none of the civilized countries mentioned above had no idea that the Second Amendment was such a good idea is very telling.  Are we so naive to think that we as a nation are above it all with an amendment that couldn't possibly address the concerns of a society that we face in 2026?  The Second Amendment was perfect for its time.  Unfortunately, its time has passed.  Yet many consider it like their holy grail. How do we stop the killing?
