Republican candidate for state auditor Joan Winters announced she is withdrawing from the race for the party’s nomination, according to Delaware Public Media. Mrs. Winters, a certified public accountant in Dover, cited family reasons for her withdrawal. She was the only GOP candidate to formally enter the race to succeed retiring auditor Tom Wagner, a Republican who has held the office for more than 30 years. “My family is the single most important thing to me, and the unanticipated rigors of a statewide campaign far exceed what I expected leaving me little time for the ones I love most. For that reason, I have decided not to run for State Auditor,” Mrs. Winters said in her statement. Three Democrats, Kathy McGuiness, Dennis E. Williams and Kathleen Davies, remain in the race to secure their party’s nomination in September. Ms. Winters, in announcing her candidacy last week, had said she had the support her family, her clients and her employees to run for state auditor. She cited her experience of 27 years as a practicing public accountant with Mitten & Winters, CPAs. She also serves as the only CPA on Delaware’s Tax Appeal Board.
