WILMINGTON — The downstate baseball high school seniors found hits hard to come by on Tuesday night.

The Gold team could only muster three hits as it fell to the Blue team 10-2 in the senior all-star baseball game hosted at Frawley Stadium.

The Gold was made up of all schools from Kent County, Sussex County, the Middletown area and the Christiana school district. The Blue had players from the rest of the New Castle County schools.

Milford High’s Bryce Greenly recorded two of the three hits for the Gold team. He had a single in his first at-bat before a triple in his second at-bat to finish 2-for-2.

Greenly was awarded Most Valuable Player honors for the Gold team while Mount Pleasant High’s Carson Fowler was the Blue’s MVP.

Greenly is the first Milford player to win the Gold MVP award since Jerrell Allen won in 2011. He is the third all-time Buccaneer MVP in the game, also joining Bob Betts who was the Gold MVP in 1990.

The Gold team has not won this matchup since 2012.

The Blue is 4-0 in the last six years. The games in 2013 and 2016 had to be cancelled due to unplayable field conditions.

The Gold scored both of its runs in the top of the fourth inning.

Austin Elliott of Cape Henlopen High walked, stole second and advanced to third on an errant throw. Kevin Buglio of Newark Charter drove Elliott home to get the Gold on the board with a RBI groundout to third.

Greenly then gave the Gold another runner in scoring position with his triple to right field. He scored on a groundout by Newark High’s Nicholas Zegna.

The Blue pounded out 11 hits in the nine-inning contest. Both teams combined for seven errors.

The Blue did most of its damage in the second inning.

After taking the lead 1-0 in the first on an unearned run, the Blue had four hits in the second. Josh Maguire (Salesianum) led off the second with a single and scored on a RBI by Dominic Petrucci (Delaware Military Academy).

Bradley Kaden (Caravel) plated Petrucci with a RBI-double. Nate Thomas of St. Elizabeth then delivered the big blow with a two-RBI single.

Kaden added another RBI with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth.

Four more runs came in the bottom of the sixth.

Salesianum’s Zach Gwynn had a RBI in the sixth with a deep fly to center which allowed a runner to score from second on his sacrifice fly. Bo Anderson (Tower Hill) was the next batter and hit a RBI double.

Anderson came around to score on a double steal. Anthony Frechette (Salesianum) capped the four-run outburst with a RBI double.

Trevor Collins of Sussex Central pitched two innings for the Gold and struck out four. Woodbridge’s Tyler DeFord also pitched a pair of innings with two strikeouts.

Some of these downstate players will suit up again in these gold uniforms when they represent the Delaware South team in the Carpenter Cup tournament on Friday.

Delaware South’s first game in the showcase tournament featuring teams from Delaware, Pennsylvania and New Jersey is Friday at 4 p.m. The first two rounds are contested at FDR Park in Philadelphia and the semifinals and finals will be played at Citizens Bank Park.

Collins, Buglio, Zegna, Tommy Pomatto (Caesar Rodney) and Robert Shorts (St. Georges) all played for the Gold on Tuesday and are on the roster for Delaware South in the Carpenter Cup.
