DOVER — The Global Institute for Equity, Inclusion, and Civil Rights at Delaware State University is partnering with the Columbian city of Cartagena to present a multi-day Afro-Columbian Expo in October 2023.

The Expo is part of the larger mission of the Afro-Inclusion Equity Development Initiative (AIED) - which the Global Institute started with the Government of Colombia in summer 2022.

In a letter of engagement from the mayor of Cartagena, it was explained that the Expo is part of the Internationalization Plan of the city, to recognize its ethnic and racial wealth, highlighting Afro-Columbians’ contributions to the city’s cultural, social and political traditions.

In the first of what promises to be future collaborations, the Institute will help organization a two to three-day expo that will bring together important Afro-Columbians, continental Africans, and others to celebrate the wealth of the African diaspora through seminars, workshops, and musical performances featuring local and international artists.

Dr. Sonel Shropshire, assistant vice-president of the Institute, said a portion of the expo may also be held on Delaware State University’s Dover campus. More information will be released as it becomes available.
