HARBESON — Deandre C. Mapp, 27, of Georgetown, was arrested on multiple charges Saturday after a physical altercation with a state trooper and fleeing on foot while being taken into custody, Delaware State Police spokeswoman Master Cpl. Heather Pepper said.
At approximately 9:15 p.m., a black Chevrolet Malibu made several traffic infractions and failed to stop at a stop sign at Zoar Road while driving ahead of a trooper, police said.
During an ensuing traffic stop, a “strong odor of marijuana” was detected from within the car, prompting a search, Cpl. Pepper said.
Approximately 0.09 grams of heroin were located inside the car, authorities said. Mr. Mapp was taken into custody without incident, but while being escorted to a police car, he physically assaulted a trooper and fled on foot, Cpl. Pepper said.
The suspect was taken into custody a short distance away. Police then located a bag containing 3.03 grams of marijuana the suspect allegedly threw before fleeing, Cpl. Pepper added.
Mr. Mapp was transported to Troop 4, Georgetown, and charged with resisting arrest (felony), third-degree assault, tampering with physical evidence (felony), possession of a controlled substance, possession of marijuana (civil violation), failure to stop at a stop sign, failure to remain in a single lane and a license plate violation.
He was arraigned in the Justice of the Peace Court 7, Dover, and committed to Sussex Correctional Institution, Georgetown, on a $5,204 secured bond.
The trooper sustained minor injuries during the altercation, Cpl. Pepper said.
