Born on December 11, 1927 in Kent County, son of the late George and Sally Morris States. He worked as a farmer for many years and then went on to work at Todd's Furniture Store, Lamonte Chemical and Queen Anne's County Schools. When he retired he went on to sulky racing. He began with ponies, and later to horses, which he enjoyed very much. He had great love for his grandchildren and his two dogs, Skipper and Megan. In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by his infant daughter; two sisters; four brothers; his mother-in-law, Louise Holden; and father-in-law, Clifton Holden. He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Catherine States; two daughters, Doris Ann Reynolds of Chestertown, and Joan Higgs and her husband Joe of Still Pond; a son, James States of Chestertown; a sister, Nancy Carpenter; two grandsons, Larry Crew and J.C. Higgs; one great grandson, Nicholas Crew; and many nieces and nephews. He loved all of his children and grandchildren and he is going to be greatly missed by all his family.
