PHILADELPHIA - Frederick Elezar Sharp, the son of the late Fred and Cina Sharp, was born Nov. 11, 1927, in Dorchester County. He passed away Thursday, Sept. 27, 2007, at the Interfaith House in Germantown, Philadelphia.
He was educated in the Dorchester County Public Schools, where he graduated from Frederick Douglass St. Clair High School in Cambridge, with the Class of 1944. During his years in high school, he played the saxophone with the school band. He was cast in a movie entitled "Swamp Fox," which was used as an educational tool throughout the Dorchester County School system.
In January 1946 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served as Steward"s Mate First Class on the USS Portsmouth and USS Wisconsin. He was awarded the Victory World War II Medal. He was honorably discharged in November 1947. During the late 1940s he was employed by Elyte Cleaners and Dryers.
In 1950 he moved to Philadelphia. For many years he was employed by Eaton Yale & Towne and Deval Corp. He was an entrepreneur, which included his real estate investments and lawn care services.
He was a member of Trinity Chelten United Methodist Church and served on the Trustee Board for many years. In recent years he became a member of Bickley"s New Beginning United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Mary; his children, Tanya, Althea (Leggie), Joey of Philadelphia, Tyrone (Deborah) of Cambridge: sisters, Lucinda Jackson, Annie Conaway and Blanche Creighton of Cambridge; eight grandchildren, Aisha, Rodia, Rysheda, Led-G, Taylor, Charles, Tyrone and Tyriqua; and a number of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
He was predeceased by sisters, Martina Perry and Helen Young; one brother-in-law, Nehemiah Creightonb of Cambridge; two sisters-in-law, Annette Walker of Orlando, Fla., and Matilda Herder of Philadelphia.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, at Bickley"s New Beginning United Methodist Church, 6239 N. Sixth St., Philadelphia, where friends may call two hours earlier. Burial will be held at the Maryland Veterans" Cemetery in Hurlock, on Wednesday.
