Fred W. Dewey

DOVER - Fred W. Dewey, Jr., passed away Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2012 at home surrounded by his family. Mr. Dewey was born Dec. 29, 1944 in Portsmouth, Va. to the late Fred W. Dewey, Sr. and Virginia Miles Dewey. He graduated from Caesar Rodney High School in 1962 and earned his Associates from Wesley and his Bachelors of Science Degree from the Delaware State University. After college he served in the United States Navy for 2 years aboard the carrier USS Independence and shore duty in Norfolk, Va. He went on to earn his Masters Degree from Southern Illinois University in guidance counseling. Mr. Dewey returned to Dover and starting teaching 5th grade science at WB Simpson Elementary and then was offered a guidance counseling position at CR Junior High. After 18 years He was appointed as a Magistrate for Kent County. Mr. Dewey retired from the court system in 2007. Mr. Dewey loved fishing, and traveling to warmer climates every year especially Jamaica. He enjoyed owning street rods, including his most recent purchase a 1953 Chevy Pickup and had also owned a 1936 Chevy Sedan, but his biggest enjoyment was following his son Shawn's professional racing, with the Sports Car Club of American and NASCAR'S Grand-AM division. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Glenna Stokes Dewey of Dover; son, Shawn Dewey and his wife Mary Pat of Townsend; brother, David W. Dewey and his wife Anita of Magnolia; nephew and niece, Jeremiah Dewey and Christine Landrau and their families; and his beloved cat Belle. Memorial Services will be held at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 17, 2012 at Torbert Funeral Chapel South, 1145 E. Lebanon Road (Rt.10), Dover. Friends may call from 3 to 5 p.m. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions be made to John Hopkins Hospital, Weinberg 2242, 401 N. Broadway, Baltimore, MD 21231. Letters of condolence may be sent and the guestbook signed at www.torbertfuneral.com.
