Francis 'Bucky' Buscher, 99

DOVER - Francis "Bucky" Buscher of Dover died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2008, at Capital Nursing Home, Dover. He was 99.

Mr. Buscher was born in Washington, son of the late Bernard and Alice (Dove) Buscher.

He graduated from the University of Maryland in 1930 and achieved letters in basketball, football and baseball, and was selected by the Sportswriters Association as All-Maryland, All-District and All-Metroplitan.

Mr. Buscher served as a detective with the D.C. Metropolitan Police Department. Upon his retirement he owned and operated an electrical contracting business.

His passion for sports stayed with him throughout his entire life.

Mr. Buscher's activities in baseball included the Albany International League, Hartford New England League, Harrisburg Eastern League and Atlanta Southern Association, and he managed the Orlando (Fla.) State League.

In basketball he managed the Heurich Brewers and in football the Dixie League.

Mr. Buscher served as a scout with the New York Yankees, Detroit Tigers and San Francisco Giants.

He was a proud member of the M Club at the University of Maryland, was a fourth-degree member of the Knights of Columbus Council 4182 of Dover and a member of the Bishop Cartwright Assembly.

Throughout the years, Mr. Buscher was a faithful member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, Dover.

He was a kind and generous man who gave of himself and will be greatly missed by those whose lived he touched.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret (Leahy) Buscher, in 1985.

He is survived by his loving daughter, Lois A. Byassee and her husband Earl of Dover; a sister, Gertrude Rizer of Fredericksburg, Va.; seven grandchildren, Stephen Huttie of Wooster, Ohio, A. David Huttie of Glendale, Ariz., Joseph E. Huttie and Madonna Melvin, both of Dover, Laurel Stone of Fairfax, Va., Sharon Emerald of Leesburg, Va., and Denise Silver of McKinney, Texas; 15 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Friends may call at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Funeral Home of Michael J. Ambruso, 1175 S. State St., Dover.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at noon on Saturday at Holy Cross Church, South State Street, Dover.

Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery.
