Four Sussex school districts going to polls May 10

School board elections this year are May 10, and four of six districts in Sussex County have contested races.

Following the filing deadline March 3, candidates face no opposition in Indian River and Cape Henlopen, but there are two individuals seeking single seats in Seaford, Woodbridge, Laurel and Delmar.

Candidates in Seaford seeking the seat presently held by Troy Purnell are George W. Del Farno and Marcus Wright.

At Woodbridge, Corey Grammar and Rita Hovermale are candidates for the seat held by longtime board member Paul “Mike” Breeding, who is not seeking another term. Mr. Breeding has served 17 years for the district, 16 as president.

In Laurel, current board president Linda Hitchens and challenger Joe Kelley are seeking the one at-large term.

And in the bistate district of Delmar, Dawn Adkins and Lauren Hudson are candidates for the seat currently held by Thomas Elliott.

In Cape Henlopen, Julie Alexander Derrick is unopposed for the four-year term in District D.

Additionally, there is no election needed in Indian River, as Madeline Baker Moses and James Fritz will retain their seats as representatives of District 1.

Mr. Fritz, who had previously served eight years on IRSD’s board, and Ms. Baker Moses were both appointed last year to one-year terms in filling board openings. Those came about when Leo Darmstadter and Anthony Cannon, both of whom were unopposed in securing seats in July 2020, subsequently moved out of their districts and, therefore, had to relinquish their spots.

All terms chosen in May will run through June 30, 2026.

Polls on May 10 will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
