At least $2M in damages caused Saturday

BETHANY BEACH — A house was destroyed by a fire Saturday, causing at least $2 million in damages, the State Office of the Fire Marshal reported.

Twelve people escaped from the oceanfront house in the 39000 block of Seaside Drive in Bethany Village, said Michael Chionchio, assistant state fire marshal.

There were no reported injuries, he said, adding that the $2 million in damages was a “conservative estimate.”

The blaze was reported around 11:30 p.m. Firefighters arrived on the scene as flames engulfed the house, which the Millville Volunteer Fire Co. described as a “large four story residential dwelling” on its Facebook page.

Winds were estimated at 15-20 mph at the time, according to MVFC. The fire took an hour to get under control, with another three needed to complete overhaul operations.

State fire investigators arrived to search for the fire’s origin and cause, but Mr. Chionchio said Monday morning that no determination had been made.

MVFC aided the Bethany Beach Volunteer Fire Co., and the Georgetown Fire Co. covered Millville’s district during the response.
