Felton man charged with DUI after crashing truck into house

SOUTH BOWERS BEACH — State police arrested a Felton man on a DUI charge after he crashed his truck into a home in the 4300 block of South Bowers Road.

Delaware State Police spokesman Master Cpl. Gary Fournier said Donald Kittle was driving his 2011 Chevrolet Silverado when it left the road and hit the home on Friday night.

“The house was unoccupied when the incident occurred,” Cpl. Fournier said.

Mr. Kittle ran away as the truck caught fire, but was found hiding between nearby houses.

South Bowers Beach Fire Company extinguished the blaze at the truck and home, Cpl. Fournier said.

James Lecates, chief engineer of the South Bowers Beach Fire Company, said they arrived on the scene at 7:48.

“The fire was under control in 10 minutes,” Mr. Lecates said. “When we got there the whole car was in flames.”

He said about half of the house was damaged because of the fire.

“The living room was burnt and half of the main roof was burned down,” Mr. Lecates said. “We’re just thankful that no one was in the house during that time.”

Mr. Kittle, who was not hurt in the crash, was then tested for driving undere the influence, and charged DUI, failure to provided information at a collision scene, failure to report a collision to police, leaving the scene of a property damage collision, and failure to have insurance, authorities said.

Mr. Kittle also faces a charge of offensive touching of a police officer when he allegedly pushed a trooper while being processed at Troop 3, Mr. Fournier said.

Mr. Kittle is being held in the Sussex Correctional Institution on a $2,000 cash bond.
