ELLENDALE — Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash on North DuPont Boulevard on Saturday.
A 33-year-old passenger was pronounced dead at the scene, said Senior Cpl. Jason Hatchell.
According to police, at approximately 10:05 p.m., a 2007 Honda Accord traveling north on the road made an aggressive, high-speed lane change to avoid a vehicle in front of it. Cpl. Hatchell said the 28-year-old operator of the Accord lost control of the vehicle, which began rotating in a clockwise direction off the east side of the highway, crashing into an unoccupied 2016 Ford Explorer.
The operator of the Accord, who sustained critical injuries, was transported to an area hospital. Police said impairment of the driver appears to have been a factor in the incident, though toxicology results are pending.
The 19-year-old front passenger of the vehicle, who was not wearing a seat belt, was airlifted to ChristianaCare, Newark, in serious condition.
Identification of the deceased 33-year-old rear passenger, who was also not wearing a seat belt, is pending notification of kin.
North Dupont Boulevard was closed for approximately four hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
