DAGSBORO — Three faculty members and a student suffered minor injuries during a fight in the Indian River High main office Monday morning, police said.

Three female students — ages 17, 16, and 15 — who reportedly entered the office to attack a 17-year-old girl were all charged with rioting, assault and criminal mischief.

The staff members attempted to break up the altercation, which left the 17-year-old girl suffering from a head injury and facial injuries. The staffers reported hand, shoulder and knee injuries that were treated at the Beebe Walk-In Care center, followed by release.

The Delaware State Police said the alleged teen victim was sitting in an office chair when the three girls entered. A 17-year-old student was taken into another office, where she “continued to be disorderly by pounding on the glass and wood portions of the office door, destroying the door blinds,” state police said in a news release.

“As a staff member tried to calm her down, the student violently attempted to leave the office, pushing the staff member and causing injury to their hand.”

According to authorities, a 15-year-old student pushed a staff member to the floor as he tried to intervene, causing a shoulder injury.

A 16-year-old student was removed by staff members without further incident, police said.

The student originally in the office was transported to Atlantic General Hospital where she was treated and released for injuries.

Charges against the 17-year-old student included rioting, two counts of third-degree assault and criminal mischief. She was arraigned at Justice of the Peace Court 3 and released on $5,500 unsecured bond.

The 16-year-old student was charged with rioting and third-degree assault. She was arraigned at JP Court 3 and released on $4,000 unsecured bond.

The 15-year-old student was charged with rioting, and two counts of third-degree assault. She was arraigned at JP Court 3 and released on $5,000 unsecured bond.

According to Indian River Superintendent Mark Steele, “The students involved in this incident will face significant disciplinary action in accordance with the district’s discipline policy.”

The superintendent lauded the assistance of the Delaware State Police and the Dagsboro Police Department and commended “the employees who stepped in to break up the altercation and restore order.

“The safety of our students has always been the district’s number one priority. This is evidenced by the presence of school safety monitors and School Resource Officers in our schools, along with the number of dedicated Indian River High School employees who intervened on Monday to protect students and staff.”

Also, Mr. Steele added, “This was an isolated incident that was under control in a matter of minutes and we want parents to remain confident that our schools are providing a safe and nurturing learning environment for their children.”
