E. Nelson Mabrey

CRUMPTON, Md. - E. Nelson Mabrey of Crumpton, Md., died of heart failure on June 14, 2014. He was 85 years old. Born Edward Nelson, but known by all as Nelson, was the beloved son of Edward and Georgeanna Jackson Mabrey of Sudlersville, Md. He was raised in Queen Anne's County and graduated from Sudlersville High School in 1945. Nelson loved agriculture and was active in the Maryland and local chapter of the Future Farmers of America. He served as secretary for the local chapter and participated on the cattle and corn judging teams earning state honors. In addition to staying active with the FFA, he enjoyed selling ads for the yearbook and surprised many with his unique acting role of Grandpa Perry in his senior class play, "Professor, How Could You!" His love of reading and academics earned him the honor of Salutatorian for his class. In 1953, Nelson married the love of his life, Marie Younger Mabrey and for fifty six years they raised three children and enjoyed the life of a dairy and grain farmer. After selling the herd in 1988, Nelson raised steers and prior to retirement, he operated a hay/straw business. In 2004, Nelson and Marie were awarded a citation from the Maryland House of Delegates for Farming Excellence. The Queen Anne's County Commissioners honored them with the Noteworthy Farmer of Queen Anne's County award for their contributions in farming. In additional to his Farm Bureau membership, he was an active member of the Double Creek United Methodist Church serving as a trustee and memberships on various committees as well as a member of the local Gideons International Chapter. Nelson loved his family and enjoyed dairy farming, cattle shows and sales, reading, gardening and singing. Along with his parents and wife, he was predeceased by a brother, Milton; and a sister, Betty Huffer. Nelson is survived by three children, Mary M. Husfelt and husband, Norman of Crumpton, Joan M. Seitzer and husband, Bruce also of Crumpton and a son, Dave N. Mabrey and wife, Amanda of Arnold, Md.; and four grandchildren, Billy Seitzer, III, Anna Marie Seitzer, Dylan Dovel and Savannah Mabrey. Friends may call from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Sunday, June 22, 2014 in the Galena Funeral Home of Stephen L. Schaech, 118 W. Cross St. Galena, Md., where funeral service will be 11 a.m., Monday, June 23, 2014. Interment will be at the Crumpton Cemetery.
