E. Desmond Goddard

E. Desmond Goddard was born in Queenstown, Cape Province, South Africa, on Jan. 3, 1926, the son of Robert and Ethel Goddard. Dr. Goddard was an only child but, in his early life, enjoyed the involvement of grandparents and many aunts, uncles and cousins.

He received his B.S. and M.S. from Rhodes University, South Africa and was a member of the South African Army in 1945-1946. He received his Ph.D. in surface chemistry from Cambridge University, England in 1948. His career was spent primarily at Unilever and Union Carbide where he held positions as a Principal Research Scientist and Corporate Research Fellow and where he continued research in surface chemistry, especially in the area of polymer/surfactant systems where he was regarded as a pioneer in the field.

Dr. Goddard published approximately 150 scientific papers, edited three books, authored 25 U.S. patents, and was a founding editor of the journal Colloids and Surfaces. He had been a frequent contributor at both domestic and international meetings, he had served as chairman of the Colloid and Surfaces Chemistry Division of the American Chemical Society, and he had served as chairman of the Gordon Conference on Chemistry at Interfaces.

Significant honors included the Samuel Rosen Award of the American Oil Chemists Society for outstanding research on surfactants (1992), the Literature Award of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists (1993), and the Maison G. de Navarre Award for excellence in research by the Society of Cosmetic Chemists (1994).

In addition to his academic and career pursuits, Dr. Goddard was a great lover of music and fine art, and he had a never-ending quest for knowledge. He traveled extensively with his family to many regions of the world for the purpose of exposing his family to varying cultures and world history.

Dr. Goddard is survived by his wife of 53 years, Norah Pennington Goddard, to whom he was married on Aug. 30, 1954 in Bromborough, Cheshire, England. He is also survived by two children, Jennifer Goddard Brant and Andrew Vyvyan Goddard and their spouses, Paul D. Brant, O.D. and Stacey Celentano Goddard, and by five grandchildren, Sarah Katherine Brant, Laura Elizabeth Brant, Emma Claire Brant, Jonathan Christopher Goddard and Allison Julia Goddard.

Dr. Goddard was preceded in death by his parents and by a son, Christopher Courtenay Goddard (6/7/1960 – 4/19/1971).

A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, at Christ Episcopal Church in Cambridge with the Rev. Michael D. Reddig officiating. Family will receive friends from 12:30- 1:30.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Dr. Goddard's honor to the Dorchester General Hospital Foundation, P.O. Box 439, Cambridge, MD 21613 or to Christ Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 456, Cambridge, MD 21613.
