Delaware State University shooting victim in serious condition

DOVER — Delaware State University on Wednesday provided an update on the four victims in an on-campus shooting incident last weekend, noting that a non-student was last known to be in serious condition.

University spokesman Carlos Holmes said one injured student was treated and released the same day as Saturday’s incident, and another student was also treated and released with non-life threatening injuries. Mr. Holmes did not specify on what day the second student was released.

Another non-student was also treated for injuries and released, Mr. Holmes said.

“Currently, we do not have any additional information to share, as this is an ongoing investigation,” Mr. Holmes said.

In a public forum Tuesday, University Chief of Public Safety Bobby Cummings said a suspect discharged a firearm into a crowd in the area of basketball courts near the Martin Luther King Jr. Student Center and Wellness and Recreation Center.

The incident occurred around 1:45 a.m. Saturday, according to a university-issued alert later in the morning. Police said it was being investigated as a possible robbery.

University President Dr. Tony Allen described any suspects as non-students who entered campus.

During the forum Tuesday, Chief Cummings said university police were being assisted by state and federal resources, with the investigation entailing speaking with students who may have information, reviewing video and analyzing evidence. Anonymous tips can be called into 302-857-7918.
