DSU falls to Howard 71-67 in makeup of suspended MEAC game

DOVER — After a week and a half, Delaware State’s men’s basketball game resumed against Howard and so did the Hornets’ struggles.

Howard held off DelState for a 71-67 MidEastern Athletic Conference victory on Wednesday afternoon. The game was a continuation of a contest from Jan. 11 that was postponed by a clock malfunction.

Play started on Wednesday with the Hornets trailing 41-38 and 15:41 remaining in the game.

Delaware State was able to take the lead before the Bison went on a 15-4 run to pull away. During that time span, the Hornets shot 3-of-15 from the floor.

“We pretty much did what we wanted to do but again made errors down the stretch,” said DSU coach Keith Walker. “The errors were slight errors like missed layups, unforced turnovers, and we’re not a team that can overcome those types of errors, especially late in the game.”

The defeat leaves Delaware State still searching for its first MEAC win and its first victory over a Division I opponent. The Hornets dropped to 1-17 overall and 0-4 in conference.

The Hornets hit four consecutive three-pointers to take a 54-51 lead with 9:34 left. That run was started by Scott Sill’s three, which closed Howard’s advantage to 47-45. Sill drained another triple the next time down the court before Dana Raysor followed with back-to-back threes of his own.

The Hornets took eight more threes the rest of the game and missed all of them.

“We didn’t stick with the gameplan,” Raysor said. “We were settling for bad shots. What we were shooting before was in the rhythm, swinging the ball for the open shot. Then we got out of rhythm, they picked the momentum up and we didn’t match it.

“The whole mentality was to go as hard as you can for 15 minutes,” Raysor added. “But unfortunately they got the better half.”

DeAndre Haywood finished as Delaware State’s leading scorer for the entire game with 23 points. Raysor added 14 points (eight of which came on Wednesday) and Sill netted a total of 12 points over the entire game.

Howard’s James Daniel III, the top scorer in Division I, also scored 23 points. The Bison were boosted by a strong effort at the free throw line, going 30-of-42 in the game compared to 12-of-17 by DelState.

Daniel III converted a pair of free throws as Howard (3-1 MEAC, 9-10 overall) broke a 56-56 tie with 4:08 left. Tyler Stone followed by two more free throws and a jumper for a six-point lead and the Hornets never got closer than four points the rest of the way.

DelState’s next chance for its first MEAC win is on Saturday when it hosts North Carolina Central at 4 p.m. That kicks off a four-game homestand for the Hornets.

“We have to just stick with it and I have to make sure our guys understand that we’re right there at the door,” Walker said. “What we have to do is just stay focused and work.”
