
MILFORD - Drexel M. (Orendorf) Chaffinch, died Sept. 3, 2012 in Milford Hospital. He was born February 11, 1925, in Milford, to Alva Chaffinch and Bertha Orendorf Chaffinch, who died in childbirth. He was raised by his maternal grandmother, Amelia Durst Orendorf, and used the Orendorf name until young adulthood. Drexel was a man of many talents. Graduating from Greenwood High School in 1943, he starred in soccer, basketball and baseball, and continued on to play some semi-pro baseball after graduating. He worked at many jobs; carpentry, masonry, dairy and crop farming, and poultry farming for the last 30 years, retiring only recently. He enjoyed singing in quartets, choral groups, and sometimes as a soloist. He was a skilled children's story teller, using his gifts at church and at home with his children and grandchildren. He was a very active and lifetime member of Tressler Mennonite Church, of which his grandmother was one of the charter members. He is predeceased by his parents and half-brothers, Alva Chaffinch Jr and Charles Chaffinch. On October 11, 1951 Drexel was married to Esther Miller Chaffinch, who survives. He is also survived by four children, Debbie Chaffinch of Harrington, Mickey (Carol) Chaffinch of Greenwood, Doreen (Brian) Grzelak of Reston, Virginia, and Barry (Waneta) Chaffinch of Harrington; and by six grandchildren, Michal, Katie and Matthew Chaffinch, and Melinda, Justin and Jaron Chaffinch; and by his half-brother, Richard (Dot) Chaffinch of Orlando, Fla. Visitation will be Friday, September 7, 2012, from 6 to 8:00 p.m. at Tressler Mennonite Church, 13371 Wolf Rd, Greenwood, DE 19950. Funeral services will be Saturday, September 8, at 11 a.m., followed by the burial in the adjoining cemetery.
