SALISBURY - Dr. S. Goldsborough "Goldy" Tyler Jr., 90, of Salisbury and formerly of Cambridge, died on Thursday, Dec. 30, 2010, at Salisbury Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. He was born on April 30, 1920, on Hooper's Island in Dorchester County, the eldest son of the late S. Goldsborough Tyler, Sr. and Alma Aaron Tyler. Dr. Tyler attended the Dorchester County public schools, graduating from Cambridge High School. He was accepted at Salisbury State Teachers College (now Salisbury University) and graduated in 1941. He excelled as a multi-sport athlete while at Salisbury State, earning twelve letters in soccer, basketball and baseball, and was among those inducted into the inaugural class of the Salisbury Athletic Hall of Fame in 1985. Dr. Tyler continued in sports after college, playing for the Brooklyn Dodgers and St. Louis Cardinals farm teams in the Eastern Shore League, and he was inducted into the Eastern Shore Baseball Hall of Fame in 1996. His long career in the field of education began in Annapolis, where he fell in love with a former Salisbury State classmate, Anna Catharine Appleton, who was also teaching in Annapolis. They married on March 10, 1944. After serving as a trooper with the Maryland State Police, Dr. Tyler joined the U.S. Navy, and as a Lieutenant J.G. he skippered a landing craft in the Pacific theater during WWII. After his military service, he went on to earn a Master's Degree in Physical Education at Springfield College in Springfield, Mass., and later earned a doctorate in education from the University of Maryland. After returning from the war, Dr. Tyler taught physical education and coached the football team at Cambridge High School, including the first season in which the Cambridge team defeated their long-time arch-rivals, Wi Hi. He later served a year as the last principal of the old Crapo High School and then as the first principal of the newly-consolidated South Dorchester High School. Dr. Tyler was also principal of North Dorchester High School, before joining the faculty in the Department of Education at his alma mater, Salisbury State College, in 1968. He retired in 1980. Dr. Tyler had a deep and abiding religious faith, which sustained him throughout the years. He was an active member of First Baptist Church in Cambridge during his years there, and later at Allen Memorial Baptist Church in Salisbury until his passing, serving as a deacon at both churches. Dr. Tyler is survived by his wife of 66 years, Catharine A. Tyler of Salisbury; and by their three children, Steven G. Tyler and wife Cille of Severna Park, Sharon T. Nuttall and husband Bill of Charlotte, N.C., and Catharine T. Gill and husband Steve of Oviedo, Fla. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, Steven, Jr. Michael and Caitlin Tyler, Chris Hughes and Mindy Hughes Leonard, and Morgan and Mackenzie Gill; and three great-grandchildren, Drew, Lauren and Tristen Tyler. He is also survived by his three siblings, Burtis Tyler of Cambridge, Kenneth Tyler and wife Sylvia of Ocean City, and Phyllis North of Cambridge; and numerous nieces and nephews. Following visitation at 10 a.m., a memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2011, at Holloway Funeral Home, 501 Snow Hill Road, Salisbury. Dr. William Warren will be presiding, and there will be a brief graveside service to be held at the Dorchester Memorial Park outside Cambridge at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages that donations be made to the charity of the donors' choice, in Dr. Tyler's name.
