Campbell, 87 SMYRNA - Dr. R. Wells Campbell died at Kent General Hospital on Tuesday, September 16, 2014, of natural causes at the age of 87. He was an Optometrist in the Smyrna area for most of his life. He had been living in Westminster Presbyterian Retirement Community for several years with his wife, Bette. Dr. Campbell was born in Dover, Delaware and grew up on a farm near Dover Downs. He loved the countryside of Dover and Smyrna and would often reminisce about his childhood days in the country. He was a graduate of Smyrna High School and often attended reunions with his friends. He was a member of the Lions Club of Smyrna and spent many days working on their special fundraising events, including spending many hours squeezing lemons for their booth in the park in Smyrna. His name is on a stone near the gazebo in the park where other volunteers are remembered. Dr. Campbell loved to cook, especially Cajun food. He happily vacationed in New Orleans where he loved the music and he would hold parties at his home with that theme. His first wife, Charlotte LeFevre Hessler, died in the 1980's, and then he married a friend Bette McNear Campbell in 1989. She preceded him in death by 1 ½ years. He loved his life on Lake Como where he lived since the 1950's. He was very happy when working in his vegetable garden. He is survived by his step-son, Frank McNear and his wife, Pat of San Miguel, Mexico; three step-daughters, Wendy Wright and her husband, Ray Holahan of Landenburg, Pa., Mary McDonough and her husband, Kevin of Blackbird, Del. and Charlotte Thompson of Hartly, Del.; and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. A visitation for family and friends will be held on Thursday, September 18, 2014 at 6 p.m. in the Faries Funeral Chapel, located at 29 S. Main St. in Smyrna. Memorial services will begin at 7 p.m. Burial with honors will be held at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Bear, DE on Friday, September 19, 2014 at 10 a.m. Condolence letters may be sent by visiting
