MELBOURNE, Australia – Madison Brengle has picked up where she left off last year at the Australian Open.

The Dover native opened the tournament with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over fellow American Coco Vandeweghe in the first round of the Grand Slam tournament early Tuesday morning.

A year ago, Brengle reached the fourth round of the Australian for the first time in her career. One of her victories was over Vandeweghe.

Brengle, who is ranked No. 49 in the world, next faces Sweden’s Johanna Larsson, who is ranked 50th. Vandeweghe was the No. 42nd player in the world.

Against Vandeweghe, the 25-year-old Brengle made only one unforced error. She also won three of six break points in the match. She won 67 percent of her first serve points.
