Dover's Brengle falls in first round of U.S. Open
FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. — Madison Brengle’s stay in the U.S. Open women’s singles draw was a short one this year.
The Dover native fell to Linda Noskova, 6-2, 6-1, in an opening-round match today in the Grand Slam tennis event.
The 18-year-old Noskova, who is ranked No. 41 in the world, needed only 52 minutes to complete the victory. She hit 34 winners while committing 24 unforced errors.
Brengle had only 13 unforced errors but hit just five winners. Brengle tied the second set at 1-1 but never led in either set.
The 33-year-old Brengle is currently ranked No. 103 in the world. She is now 11-20 all-time in the U.S. Open, reaching the third round of the tourney twice.
Noskova is playing in the U.S. Open for only the second time. A year ago, the Czech won three qualifying matches before falling in the first round of the women’s draw.
