DOVER - Joseph Freeman, 31, of Dover, was arrested on driving a vehicle under the influence of alcohol and weapons charges following a traffic stop early Sunday, police said.

The incident, Dover police spokesperson Master Cpl. Ryan Schmid said, began at approximately 1:40 a.m. when an officer on patrol noticed a vehicle in the left lane of North DuPont Highway and White Oak Road sitting at the light, when the light was green. Police said officers contacted Mr. Freeman, who appeared to be sleeping in the driver’s seat.

Field sobriety tests were conducted, police said, and Mr. Freeman was taken into custody without incident.

A vehicle search located a loaded Springfield XP-40 handgun that was concealed in the center console, authorities said.

Mr. Freeman was charged with possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, carrying a concealed deadly weapon, possession of a firearm while under the influence, driving a vehicle under the influence of alcohol, failure to have insurance identification in possession, and failure to have registration card. He was committed to Sussex Correctional Institution on $14,100 cash bail.
