Local roundup: Harrell sparks Senators to fifth straight win; Cape wins wrestling tourney

Jaheim Harrell netted 23 points as Dover High picked up a 71-48 win over Delaware Military in a nonconference boys’ basketball game Saturday afternoon.

The victory was the fifth in a row for the Senators (9-3), which built a 44-27 halftime advantage.

Freshman Jay’Vion Denis, who scored 25 points in a win over Milford on Thursday, tallied 14 Saturday. Nine players scored for Dover.

Indian River 43, Archmere 42: The Indians ended the game on a 12-7 run to edge the Auks.

Jamaal Jones (14) sank four of IR’s eight three-pointers with Brendon Bradford adding 13 points.

Sussex Central 57, Saint Mark’s 48: The Golden Knights improved to 7-3 with their third win in a row.

Girls’ basketball

Ursuline 64, Woodbridge 48: Ursuline jumped out to a 16-4 first-quarter advantage before handing Woodbridge (8-2) just its second loss of the season.

Ursuline got a combined 35 points from its two eighth graders, Taylor Brown and Jezelle Banks.

Reghan Robinson netted 18 points for Woodbridge with Payton Keeler adding 15.

Seaford 51, Smyrna 48: The Blue Jays outscored the Eagles, 16-9, in the fourth quarter to rally for the victory.

The win was the third in a row for Seaford, which evened its record at 4-4.
Jayde Rivera, who hit three three-pointers, netted 14 points for Smyrna (6-4), which had a three-game winning streak snapped,

Wrestling

Cape takes ‘Brook’ title: Cape Henlopen won the team championship at the Grapple at the Brook Tournament at Springbrook, Maryland Saturday.

The Vikings took first place with 255 points to place ahead of second-place Northwest, Maryland. (182).

Winning individual titles for Cape Henlopen were Holt Baker (126 pounds), Andrew Schaen (152), Charles Fritchman (170) and Alex Taylor (195).

Central second at Decatur: Sussex Central finished second in the team standings at the War on the Shore tournament at Stephen Decatur, Maryland on Saturday.

First-place Mt. St. Joes, Maryland totaled 243.5 points while the Golden Knights had 218. Caesar Rodney took eighth with 120.5.

Central’s Gabe Cannon won the 170-pound title with a first-period pin in the finals. The Knights’ Ivan Neal won the crown at 195.

Laurel wins twice at Spartan Duals: Laurel edged host Lake Forest, 37-36, and beat Sussex Tech, 49-23, in the Spartan Duals Saturday.

Against the Spartans, the Bulldogs registered pins in their last two matches to pull out the win. A second-period pin from Kade Wootten (106) in the final bout decided the match.

Lake Forest went 2-3 in the event with wins over Sussex Tech, 60-20 and Polytech, 55-21; and losses to Laurel, William Penn, 28-27, and Tower Hill, 43-42.

Polytech beat Sussex Tech, 42-41, when Nate Lloyd (113) ended the match with a 47-second pin.

Woodbridge 54, Archmere 24: Quincy Risper (175 pounds) posted a 57-second pin before Jeramiah Thompson (190) followed with a fall in 25 seconds to spark the Blue Raiders.

Also winning by pin for Woodbridge (3-2) were Qualier Morales (132), Cooper Andrews (144), Levi Shockley (157) and Khelei Tillman (285).

St. Mark’s 51, Indian River 21: The Spartans won the first four individual bouts before handing the Indians (4-1) their first loss of the season.
IR got pins from Terrell Lewis (215), Tyler McManus (120) and Angel Mora Salas (150).

College basketball

MEN, UMDES 68, Delaware State 66: The Hornets (0-3 MEAC, 1-15 overall) couldn’t score on the game’s final decision before dropping the MEAC decision.

The contest featured 18 lead changes and eight ties. The Hawks (2-1 MEAC, 9-8 overall) won for the sixth time in seven games.

DSU’s Martz Robinson led all players with a career-high 24 points. He went 10-of-11 from the foul line and added a team-high eight rebounds.

Raymond Somerville (3-for-3 FG; 4-for-4 FT) and Kyle Johnson added 10 points and seven rebounds each for Delaware State.

Hofstra 86, Delaware 62: The Pride took control early before downing the Blue Hens for the second time in two weeks.

Hofstra (5-1 CAA, 12-7 overall) also beat Delaware (2-3 CAA, 10-8) by 14 points in Newark on Dec. 31.

In Saturday’s rematch, the Pride jumped out to a 29-11 advantage and never looked back. Four players scored in double figures for Hofstra.

Ebby Asamoah led the Hens with 13 points and was joined in double figures by Jyáre Davis (10). Davis narrowly missed the double-double with a game-high nine rebounds.

WOMEN, Delaware State 68, UMDES 60: The Hornets earned their first win over an NCAA Division I opponent since Feb. 6, 2021, with the victory.

Senior guard Alexis Moragne scored a game-high 21 points with five three-pointers for Delaware State (1-2 MEAC, 3-11 overall). Savannah Brooks, Jessica Martino and Tyshonne Tollie all chipped in with eight points for the Hornets.

DSU took a 50-37 lead into the fourth quarter against the Hawks (0-3 MEAC, 4-13 overall).

Delaware 71, Elon 65: The Blue Hens (2-2 CAA, 9-6 overall) overcame an early 10-point deficit to end a two-game losing streak Friday night.

The fourth quarter included seven lead changes and two ties before Delaware took the lead for good at 62-61.

Klarke Sconiers led all scorers with 19 points (8-for-11 FG) while Makayla Pippin followed with 14.
