DOVER — Jordan Magee held the ball as long as he could, giving his Dover High offensive line time to get to the proper spots on the field.

With the Lake Forest High defenders in his face, Magee dumped the ball off to John Rodel Castro in the flat.

Castro only had green turf in front of him and plenty of teammates around him if he needed help.

Castro’s 53-yard touchdown reception in the fourth quarter was the go-ahead score as the Senators came from behind to edge Lake Forest 14-7 at home for their first win of the season on Friday night.

“I had all my blockers with me,” said Castro, a senior running back. “Without them, I couldn’t score. It’s a good play, a good call by the coaches and good blocking, without them I would have never done it.”

It was also the home debut for new Dover coach Rudy Simonetti. He made a solid impression as Dover scored 14 points in the final 14 minutes after Lake (0-3) had taken the lead late in the third quarter.

The 33-year-old who came to Dover from New Jersey, was able to celebrate his first career win with the Senators. He flashed a thumbs up to the home crowd as the Senators headed to the locker room after the game.

“I’m happy for the kids because they’ve really worked hard for it,” Simonetti  said. “We’ve had to overcome a lot of adversity in our short time together. I’m just so happy for them. Hats off to Lake Forest though, that was a great game, a good defensive battle.”

Not only was it Simonetti’s first victory, but Magee won his first game as Dover’s new starting quarterback.

The sophomore scored twice, including a 26-yard rush where he had to shrug off a pair of would-be tacklers to tie the contest at 7-7 with 1:45 left in the third quarter. He threw an interception on the first play of the fourth quarter but responded with the touchdown pass to Castro on the following drive.

“He’s a young quarterback but trust me he’s a good quarterback,” Castro said.

“He’s progressing every week,” Simonetti said. “I know he threw an interception but he got back with a touchdown. We’re very happy with his improvement. We’ve got a lot of young, inexperienced kids right now and we’re trying to coach them up.”

Lake Forest opened the scoring with 3:01 left in the third quarter after a first half that featured a combined one trips to the red zone. The Spartans got on the board when Desaun Bizzell scored on an 11-yard quarterback keeper.

Dover answered with a five-play 77-yard drive, capped off by Magee’s rushing touchdown. Castro did the rest two drives later.

“When he gets in open space, he’s a track star,” Simonetti said.

Dover had lost to Woodbridge and Baltimore Polytechnic (Md.) before Friday’s win to improve to 1-2.

“It feels good and congrats to coach getting that first win,” Castro said.
