Dover police investigating object set on fire on road

DOVER — Police are investigating a suspicious object set on fire Monday at a roadway intersection.

At approximately 12:49 a.m., the Dover Police Department responded to reports of a fire in the traffic circle at East Sheldrake Circle and Cannon Mill Drive.

As officers and the Dover Fire Department arrived, they located an object on fire in the road. After firefighters extinguished the object, officers investigated and believed it to be a possible pipe bomb, Dover police spokesman Sgt. Mark Hoffman said.

Nearby residents were evacuated, and the Delaware State Police Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit was notified.

EOD troopers were able to render the object safe and determined it was a pipe stuffed with rags and wrapped in clothing material, Sgt. Hoffman said. Additional evidence, including a bottle of lighter fluid, was found nearby.

No injuries resulted from the incident. Officers were in the area until approximately 3:30 a.m.

The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information may anonymously contact the Dover Police Department at 736-7111. Tips may also be submitted through Delaware Crime Stoppers at 800-TIP-3333 or here. A cash reward is possible for information leading to an arrest.
