DOVER — A 32-year-old Smyrna man was arrested early Friday for traveling on the wrong side of the highway and disregarding a police officer’s signal, Delaware State Police spokeswoman Master Cpl. Heather Pepper said.
Authorities said that at approximately 2:59 a.m., troopers were dispatched to Del. 1 and Scarborough Road for a reported vehicle traveling southbound in the northbound lanes. Troopers located the vehicle approaching the South Little Creek Road exit and attempted to conduct a traffic stop in the northbound lanes of Del. 1, Cpl. Pepper said.
Due to the high risk of serious injury, stop sticks were deployed by troopers near Exit 88 in the Magnolia area, police said. The vehicle came to stop shortly thereafter, and the operator, Darrin Swiggett, was taken into custody without incident, police said.
Mr. Swiggett was charged with felony disregarding a police officer’s signal, driving under the influence of a combination of alcohol and drugs, reckless driving, driving on the wrong side of the road, failure to obey a traffic device and a seat belt violation. His arraignment was pending, Cpl. Pepper said.
